As Restoration Breeders, we strive to revive the enchanting Chocolate Cavalier King Charles Spaniel of Old World Type.
At California Cavalier Company, we are passionate restoration breeders—dedicated to preserving and protecting traits that were once central to the breed, but have since been excluded from conformation rings.
Much like Roswell Eldridge’s 1920s commission to revive the “Blenheim Spaniels of the Old World type,” restoration breeders work with purpose and precision to honor the original identity of their breed—not just in structure and temperament, but in the full, historic palette of color and form.
Eldridge’s efforts led to the development of the modern Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, eventually narrowing the officially recognized to four colors: Blenheim, Tri-color, Black and Tan, and Ruby.
But centuries of artwork and early breeding records make one thing clear:
The breed’s genetic and visual history includes more.
We specialize in the ethical preservation of historically accurate, but currently excluded, colors—such as chocolate, chocolate & white, and solid black—which have always existed within the Cavalier type. These colors are not new. They are not rare mutations. They are part of the breed’s true origin story.
Just as the Mona Lisa requires expert restoration to reveal the masterpiece beneath centuries of wear, so too does the Cavalier deserve caretakers who can look past modern limitations to honor what was always there.
The first time I saw a photo of a chocolate and tan Cavalier, I was mesmerized. That rich brown coat, paired with perfectly placed tan points, immediately captured my attention. I had grown familiar with the four standard colors — but this? This was something different. I had to know more.
The answer? The B locus — the gene responsible for chocolate coloring.
Beyond the standard hues, Chocolate Cavaliers can appear in a variety of beautiful, lesser-known colors:
And when paired with specific a or K locus combinations, even more rare varieties emerge:
All of these can be seen in our educational video, A Dozen Colors of Cavaliers, presented by yours truly.
We’ve worked hard to bring together the genetics behind these stunning colors and are excited to showcase them in our future lines — a celebration of beauty, diversity, and breed history.
But what about health?
That’s one of the most common questions we get. The simple answer: coat color does not affect health. Chocolate is purely a cosmetic gene and, like ruby or Blenheim, it’s all about personal preference — not health risks.
